Sudden Valley Golf Course
Designed by Ted Robinson of Westlake Village, California, Sudden Valley golf course serves as the centerpiece for the private community of Sudden Valley. Located 20 minutes SE of downtown Bellingham on the picturesque shores of lake Whatcom, this unique 18-hole layout has received a "Four Star" rating by likes of Golf Digest. As a testament to this facility, Sudden Valley has served as the host site for many major Northwest tournaments including the Washington State Open, and four Washington State Men's Amateur Championships. Fairway sanding projects, tree removals, and close attention to green maintenance have improved the playability of Sudden Valley immeasurably in recent years.
The thing I really like about Sudden Valley is the distinction between the front and back nines. The front nine is relatively open and flat and winds its way serenely around the shores of Lake Whatcom. Swimmers, sail boats, water skiers and fishermen are all part of the front nine experience. On the day I was there, I watched a guy hook a nice smallmouth bass 15 feet from the tee block where I stood ready to hit. Very cool! Fairway landing areas are also a bit more generous on the front nine and the greens are generally larger.
The back nine, however, is a completely different deal. Most of it is played on a hill overlooking the lake. The fairways are lined with huge evergreens and placement off the tee is priority one. In my opinion, Sudden Valley is one of Washington’s hidden gems. It offers plenty of variety, and with water hazards in play on 14 of the 18 holes, as well as 47 bunkers sprinkled throughout the course; it can also offer plenty of test.
In addition to the great golf course, Sudden Valley offers up a number of on-site amenities and recreational opportunities for the whole family. The clubhouse includes a full restaurant and bar, banquet and meeting rooms, well-stocked pro shop, and locker rooms. A large practice green and natural grass driving range make preparing for your round easy and enjoyable. For those of you who practice the “out of the car and onto the 1st tee” routine, you too are taken care of as the parking lot is only a short sprint away! - If you have not yet had a chance to play Sudden Valley, put it on your summer playlist - You won't be disappointed!
